Walorski Protects Hoosier Jobs: Ad Features Employees Of Local Manufacturer Threatened By Obamacare Tax
October 20, 2016

Congresswoman Jackie Walorski’s (IN-02) campaign today released a new ad featuring a local manufacturer and highlighting Jackie’s work to protect Hoosier jobs and strengthen the economy in Indiana’s Second District.

Jackie promised in 2012 to stop the job-killing medical device tax that was included in Obamacare. Jackie kept her promise to protect Hoosier manufacturers, voting repeatedly to end the onerous medical device tax and sending a repeal bill (H.R. 3762) to the president’s desk. In December 2015, a two-year delay of the tax (H.R. 2029) was signed into law.

The new ad was shot at Complexus Medical, a medical device manufacturer in Mishawaka, and includes testimonials from company president Dave Behrens and several employees explaining the damaging effects the medical device tax would have had and thanking Jackie for standing up for their jobs.

“Jackie Walorski made a promise to fight for hardworking Hoosiers, and she kept her promise,” said Emily Daniels, Walorski for Congress campaign manager. “Jackie stood up for 2nd District jobs and fought to stop the job-killing medical device tax, and she’s working to keep our economy growing.”

The ad will air on broadcast and cable television over the next couple weeks.

[News] U.S. Rep. Walorski discusses government regulations, poverty at Rotary gathering
October 18, 2016

ELKHART — U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski says she’s going to continue to fight government bureaucracy.

“We need to beat government regulations off the back of companies that are trying to do good things in our communities,” the GOP lawmaker said in a speech Monday to the Elkhart Rotary Club.

Indiana’s 2nd District congresswoman, seeking a third term, is currently in a battle with Democrat Lynn Coleman and Libertarian Ron Cenkush to keep her seat. She told those gathered for the Rotary Club’s weekly luncheon that she has been humbled to bring “Hoosier common sense” to the U.S. Capitol during her tenure.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t run into somebody on the floor that says they are envious of Indiana,” she said. “We are the nation’s largest manufacturing district and we are helping to lead the nation in so many different ways.”

She gave an update on her work in various areas, including national security, veterans affairs, job creation and fighting poverty. Walorski said she is excited to be part of a Republican-led initiative called “A Better Way,” designed to reform the country’s welfare system.

“We need to help build a bridge that will take people out of poverty,” she said. “I want to work towards a solution that will end the cycle of poverty many families are experiencing. Right now our system is built for failure.”

Walorski took a few questions from the audience. One questioned her stance on keeping detainees at the U.S. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, citing, in part, the expense of keeping them locked up there.

Walorski defended her position, worried about the potential danger if detainees, instead, were brought to a jail on U.S. soil, something she opposes. “The vetting they use is not secure and you can’t put a price on preventing another attack or the life of an American soldier,” she said.

Another asked Walorski about government dysfunction.

“Most bills move, really the only sticking points are big ideological bills,” she said. “We also are contending with a heavy-handed administration and I am fighting to pass balanced budgets. That is where you see a lot of fighting happen.”

Coleman spoke at the Rotary Club in September but the media was not invited. Cenkush has not been invited to speak before the club, according to Rotary member Tom Shoff.

Election Day is Nov. 8.

Walorski Releases National Security TV Spot, Announces Support from Ambassador Bolton
October 11, 2016

Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) today released a new ad highlighting her work to strengthen our national security and keep American families safe from terrorist attacks. She also announced she received the endorsement of former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John R. Bolton.

Watch here.

“As a member of the House Armed Service Committee, Jackie has proven she’s dedicated to supporting our service members as our nation faces increased threats at home and abroad,” Amb. John Bolton said. “In Congress, she has spoken out against President Obama’s failed foreign policy, and we need her to remain there for the next president in order to ensure we continue the fight against ISIS and to strengthen our national security, which is why I am supporting her re-election.”

“Jackie is keenly aware of the danger ISIS poses to our country, and she is committed to strengthening our military and protecting our national security to prevent terrorists from attacking innocent Americans,” said Walorski for Congress campaign manager Emily Daniels. “She has led the fight to stop the worst of the worst terrorist detainees from being released from GITMO only to return to the fight. Jackie has been an outspoken critic of the president’s failed foreign policy agenda, and she is working for bipartisan solutions to keep American families safe.”

Background

Walorski has led the fight to keep dangerous terrorists in GITMO. She authored a bill, H.R. 5351, passed by the House, that would immediately block the transfer of any detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility until the end of the president’s term, or until the FY17 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), H.R. 4909, is signed into law. The NDAA passed by the House contains Walorski-authored provisions requiring the U.S. to enter into written agreements with foreign governments that agree to accept GITMO detainee transfers. The administration has said it wants to release as many detainees as possible and transfer the remaining detainees to U.S. soil before President Obama leaves office in hopes of fulfilling his campaign promise to close GITMO.

Walorski opposed the administration’s nuclear deal with Iran. She voted against H.R. 3461, legislation to approve the agreement that lifted sanctions on Iran without ending the nation’s nuclear weapons programs. She also supported the Iran Accountability Act, H.R. 5631, to impose tough new sanctions on Iran over its ballistic missile tests, support for terrorism, and human rights abuses.

Walorski has worked to strengthen America’s military and national security. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, she plays a key role in enhancing our national security through the annual defense policy bill. She authored ke provisions in the NDAA passed by the House this year, including a measure to make the National Security Council more accountable and transparent. She supported the Countering Terrorist Radicalization Act, H.R. 5471, to combat terrorist radicalization and boost efforts to detect and disrupt homegrown terror plots.

[Endorsement] National Association Of Home Builders Endorses Rep. Walorski
October 4, 2016

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) today endorsed Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.) for re-election to Congress.

“Rep. Walorski has consistently demonstrated that she is a champion of housing and has pushed to advance policies that will put families in homes, create jobs and spur economic growth,” said NAHB Chairman Ed Brady, a home builder and developer from Bloomington, Ill.

Housing is important to local, state and national economies and accounts for about 15 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product. NAHB believes in this critical election year that it is important to elect pro-housing, pro-business candidates to Congress to ensure that the housing and economic recovery continues to move forward.

“NAHB has taken this action to endorse candidates for Congress because a robust housing industry is key to a thriving national economy,” said Brady. “We are proud to endorse Rep. Walorski for re-election because she supports policies to remove needless regulatory barriers that will allow home builders to provide more safe and affordable housing for hard-working American families.”

New home construction is an engine of job creation. On average, workers from 22 fields are needed to build a home. Constructing 100 single-family homes creates nearly 300 full-time jobs and $11.1 million in fees and taxes for all levels of government to help fund schools, roads, police and firefighters.

#####

ABOUT NAHB: The National Association of Home Builders is a Washington-based trade association representing more than 140,000 members involved in home building, remodeling, multifamily construction, property management, subcontracting, design, housing finance, building product manufacturing and other aspects of residential and light commercial construction. NAHB is affiliated with 700 state and local home builders associations around the country. NAHB’s builder members will construct about 80 percent of the new housing units projected for this year.

Walorski Unveils Ad Highlighting Work on Bipartisan Anti-Opioid Law
September 27, 2016

New Campaign Spot Features 2nd District Hoosiers Who Have Faced the Crisis Firsthand.

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski’s (IN-02) campaign today launched a new TV ad highlighting her work on a bipartisan law to combat the opioid and heroin abuse epidemic in Indiana.

The ad features Mary Russell of Elkhart, Ind., who struggled with addiction and is now a recovery specialist at SPA Ministry Homes in Elkhart. The ad also spotlights others from across Indiana’s 2nd District who have dealt with this crisis firsthand, including law enforcement officials and recovered addicts.

“The opioid epidemic is a crisis in Indiana, and Jackie Walorski has fought for bipartisan solutions to help those struggling with addiction,” said Walorski for Congress campaign manager Emily Daniels. “This ad is an opportunity to highlight the people in our district who are confronting this crisis head-on as well as to share the message of Jackie’s leadership in Congress to get them the resources they need.”

The bipartisan Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act (S. 524), which was signed into law in July, authorized an increase in federal resources to confront the opioid epidemic, treat addiction, and prevent overdose. Congresswoman Walorski was selected to serve on the conference committee that negotiated the final details of the legislation due to her leadership on the issue. Two provisions she authored to protect veterans from opioid overprescription were included in the legislation.

In an editorial (“Our Opinion: Vigorous response to opioid epidemic,” 5/19/16), the South Bend Tribune called the comprehensive legislation that Walorski helped draft “a display of bipartisanship that’s all too rare these days.”

The ad will run on broadcast networks in the South Bend market.

Walorski Unveils New Ad On Fight Against Hunger
September 27, 2016

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski’s (IN-02) campaign released a new ad focusing on her work to fight hunger and help Hoosiers get out of poverty.

“Having seen poverty firsthand overseas and here in Indiana, Jackie Walorski is working tirelessly to make sure no one in our community has to go to bed hungry,” said Walorski for Congress campaign manager Emily Daniels. “Jackie has toured dozens of local food banks and community organizations that are on the front lines of the fight against hunger, and she’s working across the aisle in Congress to fix our nation’s welfare programs so everyone has a chance at the American Dream.”

Congresswoman Walorski serves as chair of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition, which has spent nearly two years examining federal hunger programs to learn what works and what can be improved, with the goal of better helping individuals lift themselves out of poverty.

Last year, Congress passed a bipartisan law, with Walorski’s support, to encourage donations of food to community anti-poverty organizations. The House passed H.R. 644, the Fighting Hunger Incentive Act, to permanently extend the tax deduction for local businesses to contribute food inventory to food pantries and shelters. The legislation was later signed into law as part of a larger bill.

In June, Walorski received the Hunger Leadership Award from the bipartisan Congressional Hunger Center for her “significant contributions to fighting hunger in the United States and around the world.”

[In The News] Wabash Plain Dealer: House Approves Walorski GITMO Bill
September 20, 2016

“The U.S. House voted 244 to 174 on Thursday to approve Walorski’s legislation, which calls for the suspension of the Guantanamo inmate release program until the authorization of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for fiscal year 2017 or the end of the president’s term”

In defense of her legislation, Walorski pointed to a recent “Reuters” report that claims that two more former Gitmo detainees have returned to fighting for terrorist organizations.

“I think this is a common sense issue,” Walorski told the Plain Dealer. “It’s a common sense national security thing. (President Barack Obama) is trying to complete a campaign promise at the risk of American lives. I don’t think it’s too much to ask that (inmate transfers cease) until the next president takes office.”

An unclassified report from the director of National Intelligence states that seven of the 144 detainees released by the Obama administration have returned to fighting, while an additional 12 former inmates are believed to have reengaged in combat.

The confirmed recidivism rate for inmates released under the Obama administration is lower than that of inmates released under the Bush administration – 4.9 percent to 20.9 percent, respectively, according to the report.

The intelligence report continues that former detainees who have been transferred to countries with ongoing conflicts and internal instability pose a greater recruitment and reengagement risk.

An additional 12.7 percent of former Gitmo detainees released over the last 11 years are believed to have reengaged in combat, the report states.

Walorski Releases New Ad: “The Olsons”
September 13, 2016

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski’s campaign today released a TV spot featuring a Goshen veteran and his wife, who share his story of being misdiagnosed at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facility, nearly costing him his life.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski’s campaign today released a TV spot featuring a Goshen veteran and his wife, who share his story of being misdiagnosed at a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facility, nearly costing him his life.

More about the Erik & Erin’s Story

In September 2014, former Marine Sgt. Erik Olson and his wife Erin, also a Marine Corps veteran, contacted Walorski after Erik’s health condition deteriorated while under the care of the local VA. Walorski contacted VA Secretary Robert McDonald, and Erik was transferred to a facility in Indianapolis, where he was diagnosed with cancer. He is now in complete remission.

The Olson family’s story was featured in several local news reports, including on WNDU (“Goshen veteran’s family speaks out about treatment at local VA clinic,” 9/30/14; “Veteran blames poor treatment at VA for missed cancer diagnosis,” 5/23/15).

More about Jackie’s work

As a member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee, Congresswoman Walorski has been a leader in the fight to ensure veterans get the care they earned while serving their country and to hold the VA accountable when it fails to properly treat veterans.

Since being elected to Congress, many pieces of legislation that Jackie has introduced or cosponsored have been passed by the House and signed into law. Jackie will not rest until those who have served our country have access to the very best care.

In the wake of the nationwide VA wait time scandal, Walorski introduced legislation to prohibit the VA from waiving its scheduling guidelines. In June 2016, her legislation passed the House as part of a larger bill to fix the VA and protect veterans.

Her legislation to prevent the overprescription of powerful opioids to veterans at VA facilities was recently signed into law in 2016 as part of the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, a bipartisan bill to combat the opioid epidemic. Read more on WNDU.
